February Playlist: Two Guns’ Sophomore Year Elephant 6 Playlist

image

A playlist inspired by my recent Jeff Mangum concert. Sophomore year of college, I was a bit obsessed with The Elephant 6 Collective and their brand of sunny and psychedelic pop music - I always thought of it was as if these bands decided to play their version of Beach Boys songs through a lo-fi filter. And I loved it (particularly Neutral Milk Hotel and Beulah). In any case, here are 10 songs I loved in college. And read more about the Elephant 6 Collective here.

1. The Sunshine Fix - “Yesterday’s World”
2. Beulah - “If We Can Land on the Moon, Surely I Can Win Your Heart”
3. Neutral Milk Hotel - “Two-Headed Boy”
4. The Olivia Tremor Control - “Hideaway”
5. Elf Power - “Skeleton”
6. Of Montreal - “Penelope”
7. The Sunshine Fix - “The Sound’s Around You”
8. The Apples in Stereo - “Look Away”
9. Beulah - “Popular Mechanics for Lover’s”
10. Neutral Milk Hotel - “Holland, 1945”

Neutral Milk Hotel’s lo-fi yet sonically eclectic and emotionally wrought classic In the Aeroplane Over the Sea was released fifteen years ago this week. To note and celebrate this important anniversary, we reached out to the band’s biggest fan, Parks and Recreation’s April Ludgate, who nearly destroyed her relationship with Andy in season three when she declared Neutral Milk Hotel her favorite band (instead of Mouse Rat) and its singer/songwriter/genius Jeff Mangum her favorite rock star (instead of Andy). She graciously passed on this characteristically grumpy and yet earnest appreciation of the album throughParks’ showrunner Mike Schur. Let this introduce a new type of music writing into the Pitchfork era: crankicism.

Jeff Mangum @ The Neighborhood Theatre, 1/31/13

While I had been wanting to see Neutral Milk Hotel or Jeff Mangum for nearly 12 years, my buddy Susong had little to no exposure to either him or the band (save for my lending him In the Aeroplane Over the Sea a few years back). Despite the huge difference in fandom, I think it’s fair to say that Susong enjoyed the show almost as much as I did - that’s how good it was. With Mangum being as reclusive as he has been, who knows if I will ever get to see him again but at least I will always have that one night in January 2013 when I saw a cult hero sing some of my favorite songs from sophomore year of college.

Seeing a Jeff Mangum (of Neutral Milk Hotel) solo show tomorrow night at The Neighborhood Theatre and I couldn’t be more excited. I’ve wanted to see him for at least 12 years, since I was a Elephant 6-obsessed sophomore in college.
